Idealist, Rational, Guardian, and Artisan Personality Types and Compatible Pairings

In Please Understand Me II (3rd ed., 2006), psychologist David Keirsey grouped the 16 Myers-Briggs personality types into four broad temperaments: Artisan (SP), Guardian (SJ), Rational (NT), and Idealist (NF). Keirsey's work examined how each temperament communicates, what each values in close relationships, and how the 16 personality types behave as mates, parents, and leaders.

Below is a practical overview of the four temperaments, the 16 personality types within them, and the most compatible and challenging romantic pairings identified across our 16 Myers-Briggs compatibility guides.
